E-bikes have become the next big thing in cycling, with sales rocketing and brands competing to get their version out.
They’re so popular because they come with great benefits, allowing you to cycle for longer, tackle big hills and keep up with other cyclists – taking the strain out of your cycle.
But in the middle of all the buzz, it’s important to know what to look for when choosing where to spend your hard-earned cash.
Here’s a good guide of what to look for when buying your very own e-bike:
The battery is one of the most important parts of the bike, after all, it’s what’s powering it! Look for well-known brands that can charge quickly and lasts a long time, without being too heavy.
A lot of this depends on the quality, so always go for big brand names, like Samsung or Sony. Generally, the higher the AmpH, or amp hours, the longer the battery will last, while the higher the voltage, the more power it has.
A full charge can take from 4 – 6 hours but some brands now offer speed chargers that can take down the time to 2- 4 hours – like this one, the Danish Mate Bike.
Normally, the more expensive e-bikes come with the better batteries, but there are some out there that offer great specs without the massive price tag. The Mate bike is one of them.
It’s useful to remember that the more powerful the motor, the faster you can drain the battery – but a good e-bike will come with different modes so you can set how much power you’re actually using for what you need to do.
The power and position of the motor are important to consider. Motors can either be mounted on the wheel (hub) or on the frame, and most are on the wheel. This means that it can track how you’re pedalling and adjust the speed in sync with your own.
The power of a motor is measured in watts – the higher the watts, the faster the bike can go, so look for a bike that has around 250w.
Any cyclist knows the importance of good gears, and e-bikes are no different. Look out for big brand names, like Shimano, that offer a good amount of different settings. You can find a great example of an e-bike with super gears here.
A lot of e-bikes are big and clunky and can be difficult to take places. The weight of an e-bike is a good indicator of whether you’ll be able to carry it, while even more difficult to find is a foldable e-bike.
There are some out there on the market now but they are few and far between and can vary in quality. If you can fold your e-bike, you can easily load it into you car and take it with you when you go places, making it the perfect travel companion. The Mate Bike comes with a three-step folding system and carry handle, and is well-priced for the design – check it out here.
Most e-bikes can come with a costly price, especially as the bigger brands roll their models out and make updates to certain features.
But you don’t have to go for the most expensive for it to be any good – if you can find the above features in one bike there’s no reason not to get it for a cheaper price.
Previously, the bigger brands had the lion’s share of the market, but now more and more brand are popping up that offer great value and specs without the massive price tag, through crowdfunding and not having physical stores.
It’s even becoming a bit of a movement, with some Scandinavian countries leading the way by exporting their love of cycling and great design to the rest of the world.
One of the hottest models at the moment is the Danish brand, Mate Bike. It combines the Copenhagen lifestyle with sleek design, but without the huge cost.
The Mate bike offers three different models, all under $1000, which makes it one of the best value for money brands out there, as most electric bikes on the market cost into the thousands.
RiRight now, Mate Bikes are on sale for almost half of what they’re worth, because they’re being sold on a crowd funding site until Mate’s webshop opens later this year. When that happens, the bikes will sell at their full retail price – up to 42% higher than they’re being sold for now. So get yours now, while they’re still available at such low prices. With prices starting at $699, with shipping at $200, you can get a Mate Bike for just $899. It won’s stay this low for long, so get it before it sells at full price.
